Cosy November Nights: French-Style Touches To Make Your Home The Place To Be

By Susan Kiely

I don’t know about you, but I am not enjoying being out in that cold weather one little bit! The grey skies that seem to stick around all day, the biting wind that cuts right through your coat, the puddles you can’t see until your socks are wet — honestly? I’d much rather be tucked up indoors than stepping foot outside after dark. Pajamas on, phone down, home browsing, cosy nights in — that’s my whole theme right now. Candles glowing on every surface, a soft throw draped over my lap, something warm and delicious slowly cooking in the oven, and a nice glass of wine in hand. That’s November done right, isn’t it?

It’s the perfect time of year, really — to slow down, close the door on the grey outside, and make your home feel like the proper sanctuary it should be. Somewhere you’re actually glad to come back to, rather than rushing out from the second you walk in. And that’s what this is all about — little touches that bring that quiet, timeless French elegance to your rooms, that feel special and luxurious without trying too hard, that last beautifully and make every evening feel a little bit lovely.

I’ve also fallen completely in love with something lately that I haven’t seen in anyone else’s house yet —

It’s such a simple thing, but it gives your walls such graceful, refined character — and trust me, no one else will have the same pieces.

Everything below is chosen to lift your home, warm it up, and make you want to cancel plans and stay in instead.

Luxury home interior with premium fur throws and cushions arranged on plush sofa with warm natural light

Wrap yourself in pure warmth

There’s nothing quite like that moment when you sink into your sofa and pull something soft and warm around you. It changes the whole feel of the room instantly — and these aren’t just nice to look at, they’re made to use and love for years.

Pure wool and silk throws— soft neutral tone, hand-knotted fringes It’s light but wonderfully warm, drapes so beautifully over any sofa, armchair or the end of your bed. The blend of wool and silk feels soft against your skin and has that quiet luxury you can feel as soon as you touch it. Pull it round you on a chilly evening and you honestly won’t want to move.

Set of heavy linen cushions — classic French stripe, delicate tassel edges Soft, natural, plump and inviting — the kind of cushions that make you sigh and sink straight in. The linen gets softer and lovelier the longer you have it, and the gentle stripe fits perfectly with every colour scheme. They just make your sofa or bed look finished, welcoming and beautifully put together.

Light that turns every evening into something special

Lighting is everything in November, isn’t it? Bright overhead lights can feel harsh and cold — but soft, gentle glow? It wraps the whole room in warmth. These are the pieces that make your home feel calm, elegant and wonderfully welcoming as soon as you walk through the door.

Pair of hand-thrown ceramic table lamps — soft ivory glaze, pure silk shades No two are exactly alike — that’s how you know they’re special. The glaze has subtle variations that catch the light beautifully, and the pure silk shades diffuse the glow into something so soft and golden. Switch them on as soon as you get home and the whole room shifts — instantly calmer, instantly cosier, instantly yours.

This is the statement piece that catches everyone’s eye. Heavy, solid, beautifully made — the crystal sparkles when the light hits it and casts tiny golden flecks around the room. It feels grand without being loud, and it becomes the focal point of wherever you place it.

Set of hand-painted ceramic candlesticks — soft cream glaze, gold trim There’s nothing quite like real candlelight for setting the mood. These are individually painted so each one is slightly different — small imperfections that make them feel human and warm. Group them together on your mantel, your dining table or your tray and let the gentle glow do the rest.

Elegance you won’t see in every other house

These are the pieces that make people walk in and say “oh that’s lovely — where did you find it?” Timeless, refined, and chosen because they feel truly special, not because everyone else has them.

Gilt ornate wall mirror — hand-carved frame, bevelled edge It catches that soft lamp light and bounces it around the room, making everything feel bigger, brighter and a little grander. The frame has real depth and detail — you can see the handwork in it — and the bevelled glass gives it that crisp, high-quality finish that cheaper mirrors just don’t have.

Hand-printed French botanical wall art set — soft gilded frames And this — this is my absolute favourite find lately. I honestly haven’t seen these in anyone else’s home yet, and I know as soon as people see them they’ll want them. Graceful, timeless illustrations of flowers and botanicals, printed on archival paper and set in slim, elegant gilded frames. They bring such quiet character to your walls — refined, peaceful, and completely unlike anything you’ll see everywhere else. Be the first to get these, trust me.

Finishing touches that pull it all together

It’s the small things that finish a room and make it feel yours — the details you see every day, that make you smile when you walk past them. Practical and pretty in equal measure, and built beautifully enough to keep forever.

Solid white marble tray — hand-laid brass inlay Perfect for your candle, your glass, your jewellery, your favourite little things. The marble is thick and cool to the touch, the brass lines are laid by hand, and it has that solid, expensive feel the moment you lift it. It keeps surfaces tidy and looks elegant doing it.

Keep your favourite small things inside so they’re easy to find and always look elegant. The finish is soft and warm, not shiny or cheap — the kind of piece you’ll keep and move with you from home to home.

Set of embroidered linen napkins — delicate floral detail Such a small thing, but it makes every meal feel special. Whether it’s a quiet dinner for two or friends round on a Sunday, these feel soft, natural and beautifully made. The embroidery is subtle and graceful — French charm right there on your table.

A few little things I’ve learned about making it feel just right:

  • Stick to soft, gentle colours — warm cream, soft ivory, pale gold, quiet grey — they wrap the room like a hug and never feel overwhelming

  • Low, warm light always beats bright overhead lights — use plenty of lamps and candles, and let the glow be soft

  • Odd numbers look best — group three small things together on a shelf or tray, and it instantly feels balanced and intentional

  • Don’t overfill every space — one special piece on a shelf looks far more considered than ten things crowded together

  • And seriously — grab that botanical wall art while you can. It’s fresh, it’s different, and I have a feeling everyone’s going to be looking for it before long

    Final word:

November doesn’t have to feel long, dark or dull. It’s actually the perfect excuse — to slow down, light the candles, pour that glass of wine, and make your home exactly the place you want to be. There’s such a lovely feeling when you’re getting ready to go out and think — actually, I’d rather stay here. That’s what these little touches do — they make coming in better than going out. And isn’t that the nicest feeling of all?

Found something lovely for your home lately? Or fallen for those botanical prints as hard as I have? Do tell me in the comments — I’d love to hear what you’re loving, and what’s making your evenings feel special right now.
